The rooms and spaces we inhabit have a profound impact on our emotions and experiences. This is highlighted by the PIPA 2023 recognition of the Six Senses Douro Valley architecture projects and the commercial design of Marktkauf Ratingen
The latest edition of the Porcelanosa International Project Awards (PIPA) underlined how relevant residential architecture is as well as the impact of hotel project and commercial spaces when creating lasting impressions.
Architecture and interior design have the ability to transform these spaces into places that, in addition to being functional, inspire, captivate and become the setting for memorable experiences. The winning projects in the PIPA 2023 awards ceremony 'Hotels' and 'Public and commercial spaces' categories, are clear examples of how design can impact both aesthetics and the way we live and experience the world around us.
Clodagh Design won the 2023 PIPA award in the Hotels category thanks to its involvement in the reform of the Six Senses Douro Valley hotel, located in Samodães, Portugal.
Six Senses Douro Valley it presented its renovated facilities in the summer of 2021: seven new suites/villas and three rooms designed by Clodagh Design, the New York based design firm. These new spaces are harmoniously integrated with the soft color palette and the existing finishes. They are filled with natural light, treating guests to magnificent views of the surrounding wine landscape.
The decor incorporates authentic materials from the Duero Valley, such as lamps made from wine bottles, wine-making tools and mural art inspired by wooden boxes.
Harmonious interaction with the wine-growing landscape, the sophisticated use of color, textures and textiles, as well as the meticulous selection and use of local materials, were key elements that convinced the jury.
Combined, the new suites and rooms at the Six Senses Douro Valley offer a fusion of natural beauty and authenticity in design, providing guests with a unique and immersive experience in the heart of Portugal's wine region.
The German supermarket Marktkauf Ratingen, located in Düsseldorf, Germany, it won the first prize in the 'public and commercial spaces' category. Its sophisticated and cutting-edge design was created by the studio Kinzel Architecture.
The PIPA judges praised its modern design and content, highlighting 'the beauty and the high-end details that have been created to enhance such a daily activity' in this German supermarket.
This property stands out for its avant-garde and understated design. The interior features various materials such as wood, cement, stainless steel and urban vegetation elements. All of them give the spacious room a clean appearance and a pleasant atmosphere for customers.
The space dividers, made of perforated and semi-transparent stainless steel, create a sense of division that cleverly counteracts the room's spaciousness. In addition, Porcelanosa's ceramic floor tiles inspired by cement are a real stand-out feature. Its continuity is interrupted by a black linear tile that guides customers through the various product sections.
Marktkauf Ratingen is characterized by its wine section, with a bright black decor adorned with outlines of wine bottles and strip lights on the sides.
The lighting is unique and surprising, with hanging lamps made from wooden frames with built-in strip lights. Futuristic lighting elements in the shape of circles and vertical light bands are strategically located on the suspended ceiling panel, gently extending to the rear wall of the checkout area.
In short, Marktkauf Ratingen stands out for its unfussy and minimalist design approach, which, in addition to contributing to excellent customer orientation, provides a memorable shopping and design experience.
In the 'Hotels' category, the members of the jury granted a special mention to Sofía Aspe Interiorismo for its involvement in "the renovation and interior design" of The Alest Hotel.
