Fall decorating will allow us to transform our homes in a period of important changes. A season of passage that reflects the end of summer and preparations for winter through a warm and welcoming color palette, rich textures and an overall sense of calm.

With the arrival of fall comes the opportunity to adapt and transform our homes in keeping with the season. We prepare for the change of season by re-laying the rugs on the floor, pulling out the warmer bedding, cleaning fireplaces, and checking the central heating. The days are getting shorter and the cold begins to make its first appearance.

In this post we will explore some of the hottest trends in fall decorating. Colors and materials to make your home more welcoming and help us adapt more comfortably to the changes taking place outside the home.

Fall colors

The color palette of fall reflects the softer light. The shorter solar arc creates a golden atmosphere and with the fall of the leaves, the landscape turns shades of brown, yellow, ocher, gold and burnt red. A spectacle that nature offers us, full of nostalgia and warmth.

These colors can be incorporated into walls, furniture and accessories to create the desired context in your home. Below we define some elements that we can bring from outdoors to indoors to recreate fall in our interior decoration.

  • Natural decorative objects. Potted houseplants, pine cones, tree branches, leaf garlands, dried flowers and tall grass fronds add the perfect texture to interior decorating.
  • Wallpaper. Wallpaper offers a wide variety of patterns and designs that can bring the warm and welcoming atmosphere we are looking for in fall decoration.
  • Craft and decorative objects. Vases, glassware, kitchen utensils and storage ladders in autumnal materials brighten walls, mantelpieces, bookshelves and dining tables.
  • Lighting. Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a cozy atmosphere during the fall due to the lack of outdoor light. Floor lamps with fabric shades in warm colors can create a soft and pleasant light. With rattan and natural woven fibers, the effect is even more pronounced.
  • Scents and candles. Fall decorating is not complete without home fragrances. More intense olfactory notes tend to work best in autumn, with opulent fragrances evoking wood, leather, musk and spices.

Fall accessories

Accessories are a simple way to transform the home with every change of season. Ceramic vases with dried flowers, decorative pillows with fall motifs, and art paintings that reflect the beauty of this season can all play a part in fall decorating. Pumpkins, dried leaves and pinecones are also ideal decorative elements for fall, and can be placed in baskets or on the coffee table.

Natural materials that evoke fall

Even common household materials can be used for fall decorating. Wooden floors, furniture and cabinets; rattan accessories and sisal rugs; terracotta, colored crystals and gold details; dried flowers or seasonal products such as pumpkins, etc. It's a great idea to move these items to a more prominent place or accentuate them with decorative elements so they are more visible. Here are some other ideas:

  • Wood flooring. If this type of flooring is available, it is advisable to place carpets and rugs away from the walls. This shows off the texture of the wood below. This effect is enhanced when the floor surface is contrasted with soft, voluminous fabrics, such as those of a thick pile carpet.
  • Porcelain. The neutral, earthy and brown colors of the ceramic tiles provide extra comfort when combined with underfloor heating.
  • Wall cladding. The 3D effect of wall panels is best appreciated in fall light, when shadows are more pronounced. We can reinforce this sensation with warm-colored paints or wallpaper panels with very marked textures.
  • Ceramics and terracotta. Because of their warm, earthy tones, ceramics and terracotta are a perfect fit for fall decorating. They are also materials commonly used in plant pots, which we can fill with lush vegetation or dry floral arrangements, for example.
  • Natural fibers. By incorporating natural fibers into fall decorating, we create an ambiance that evokes the beauty of nature this season. The texture and warmth of rattan, fique, cane or sisal help create a cozy home.

Warm fall textiles

Whether in the bedroom or the living room, in a study or in a reading corner, cozy textiles and fabrics in autumn colors bring warmth and color. Quilts, blankets and cushions are the ideal way to instantly create an autumnal atmosphere on sofas, armchairs and beds. The textures of knitted wools, tactile linens and velvets enhance this sensation, creating dimension and depth.

Color ranges should vary between darker and lighter versions of the same colors for maximum effect. Brown and beige, combined with off-white and sand tones; orange, red and yellow; metallic touches like gold and the bright glimmering of silk can give extra life to a sofa or bed.

Fall decorating in the living room and bedroom should include curtains on the windows. In addition to adding pattern and color, its fabrics help insulate a space and wrap it in a blanket of comfort. These elements literally and figuratively keep us warm.

Fall decorating in the kitchen

In fall, we spend more time at home, preparing dishes to share with family and friends, watching our favorite TV shows, or just keeping warm. Kitchen and dining room tables tend to be used more intensively during these months.

  • Table decoration: We can decorate an autumnal table runner with seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as pumpkins, zucchini and figs. This can be accompanied by cutlery in fall colors such as red, orange and brown, and patterned plates or coffee cups with floral motifs.
  • Kitchen countertops: Brass and copper utensils around a countertop can add a seasonal touch to the kitchen. We can also leave some vegetables in sight on this surface, especially the most eye-catching ones such as pumpkins. Even a basket of fresh apples on the countertop can add a touch of fall to the kitchen decor.

Home and hearth in fall

In the fall, the fireplace begins to become the centerpiece of the home again, whether it is gas, coal or wood-burning. A contemporary fireplace can create a central axis within a living space that has great visual appeal. We can decorate it with candles, fruits, garlands of dried leaves or flowers to give it a seasonal touch, and add logs for their aroma and decorative power.
