How to add a rustic touch to your home

Rustic is more than an adjective; it is a philosophy of life based on two basic but essential principles: simplicity and naturalness. Rustic style seeks to resemble the charm and beauty found in the fields and forest, the mountains and seas, emphasizing organic and unrefined elements, such as raw wood, stone, leather and textiles like cotton, linen and wool.

The term rustic is rather broad and describes a wide range of interior design styles, including Tuscan, coastal and cottage, among others. Consequently, there are several ways to create a rustic aesthetic,  each quite different from the other and with its distinctive characteristics. The following are only a few examples of how to add a rustic touch to your home decor.

Wooden beams

Leave the wooden beams of the sloped ceiling on view. They make space seem all the more cosy and comfortable and add the perfect hint of rusticity to any home. Use the same type of wood also on the floors and walls to increase the effect. You will feel like you’re in a log cabin situated in the middle of the forest.

Natural Stone Fireplace

Stone is commonly used to create exposed walls, usually surrounding the fireplace. You can decide to go with a stone fireplace to match the overall tone of the room or pick a hue to contrast it. We propose you to choose a grey natural stone, like the one in the picture above and combine it with a timeless light wood floor and a leather armchair. We’re sure it’ll become your favourite place in the house.

Rustic Antler Decor

Antlers, whether natural or artificial, are perfect for bringing a cabin touch to your home. They never go out of fashion and are truly versatile,  which makes them a timeless and lasting decorative element.

Raw wood furniture

Rustic furniture has no predictable lines or patterns, unlike modern or classical furniture. And it is due to the materials in which they are made. Things like unrefined tree trunks, branches and twigs are used to make tables, headboards, bookshelves, mirrors or bed frames, offering an authentic feel and appearance. Reconnect with nature and let yourself be seduced by her soothing powers.
