Located on the Czech Republic’s main motorway, this innovative multi-purpose site combines different services in one. Its functional design houses a petrol station, an electric vehicle charging station and a motorway restaurant.
Although the initial project was to design a conventional motorway petrol station, the concept evolved into a multi-purpose structure. Thus, an ‘open’ environment is created that connects to the motorway and also to the nearby community. The aim was to create a commercial area in which people can momentarily forget about the hustle and bustle of the motorway and enjoy a pleasant and relaxing environment.
To achieve this, natural materials were carefully combined. The use of greenery, both symbolically and literally, extends throughout the interior and exterior. In this way, a natural and contemporary atmosphere is created at the same time.
In the interior, hanging plants and cement-effect ceramics are used as the general flooring of the space – Harlem Acero model by Porcelanosa – combined with wooden furniture. The revestimiento PIPA (Porcelanosa International Project Awards) award for best project in the ‘Commercial and Public Spaces’ category.
For the design of the façade and the interior, elements of automotive engineering and industrial design were the key inspirations. These include the shape of the interior space, the visible supporting structure, the materials used and the division of the glazed surfaces. Light enters the interior through the wooden louvred sunshades, enhancing the design of this innovative approach to a typical motorway service station.
