The two companies have signed a contract to set up a green hydrogen system and heat pump for the ceramics factory's heat-driven processes.
The fight against climate change and the equitable distribution of natural resources are two key priorities for PORCELANOSA, which has taken its environmental measures one step further with the GREENH2KER project, in collaboration with Iberdrola.
The business agreement represents a significant advance for PORCELANOSA's decarbonisation plan. It will enable the company to reduce its CO2 emissions, developing a system combining green hydrogen and a heat pump that will be used for the factory furnace.
With this solution, the multinational ceramic company can accelerate its optimisation of thermal energy (residual) in the manufacturing process and replace up to half of the natural gas consumed for fuel with green energy. What’s unique about the system, is that it will use excess heat within the plant to power highly efficient heating systems (heat pumps).
PORCELANOSA's main objective is a 2,351 tonne reduction in CO2e per year, and also to reduce its industrial activities' environmental impact, following the European Union's Sustainable Development Goals.
To develop the GREENH2KER project the two companies have been working with Sacmi, an international manufacturer of machines and complete plants for the ceramics industry.
Given the project's high technological capacity and level of innovation, it was submitted to the European Small-Scale Innovation Fund programme. This is aimed at real investment projects, and evaluates technological innovation, GHG emission prevention, maturity and replicability in terms of other industrial sectors' decarbonisation strategies.
