Twelfth Porcelanosa Awards Finalists: “Lavabook”, a laundry converted into a library

María Menéndez, a student at the University School of Design, Innovation and Technology (ESNE), has designed an open space where literature meets new technology

Her project reached the final of the Twelfth Porcelanosa Awards in the Forward-Looking Design – Students category because of its original approach to using the PORCELANOSA Group collections

You can read the latest novel by Eduardo Mendoza while doing your washing in Lavabook, a laundry/library designed by María Menéndez, a student at the University School of Design, Innovation and Technology (ESNE).

The project, which was shortlisted in the final stage of the Twelfth Porcelanosa Awards in the Forward-Looking Design – Students category, sets out a design for an open space with separate areas (one for a laundry and another for a library) linked by the use of white, brown and beige tones. “The launderette design blends different levels with equipment and materials typical of kitchens or living rooms,” explains Menéndez.

Feeling at home

The sensation of “feeling at home,” as the author puts it, is achieved by combining colours and textures inspired by wood and marble, such as the Persian White Classico flooring by L’Antic Colonial, reminiscent of the brilliance of Carrara marble, Its two finishes (polished and classic), with grey veins, create a feeling of space and light.

The wall tiles, which include the Contour White collection by Venis, provide another artistic touch. The wavy relief on these tiles forms a harmonious contrast with the library’s furniture, which is set off by the Authentic 1L Pure parquet flooring by L’Antic Colonial. With a hand-brushed finish, this oak wood in single-strip format complements the building’s personality, giving it a warm, welcoming character.
