His professional work, along with his commitment to the sector, led him to picking up the European Gold Medal for Work Merit in 2017. As well as that, he picked up the Medal for Tourist Merit, which was awarded to him by the Council of Ministers in 2015.

Honesty, empathy, determination and effort are the values which Kike Sarasola (born in Madrid in 1963) has applied to his sport (he was the four-time Spanish champion in Equestrianism and he was an Olympic equestrian rider in Atlanta, Barcelona and Sidney) and his business career, with the Room Mate Group being the gold medal.

Sarasola, who will be a member on the jury at the 12th PORCELANOSA Grupo Architecture & Interior Design Awards, decided to bring tourism obstacles down in 2005; the date on which he founded Room Mate Hotels. This meant meeting the demands he was looking for as a guest, but even more so as a businessman.

A carefully-studied obstacle jump into the hotel industry

A trip to New York, along with an uncomfortable stay at a luxury hotel, pushed him into a search for answers, which was the “three Ds” challenge: Dormir, ducharse and desayunar (sleep, shower and breakfast). Mandatory requirements which can be found in his three companies: Room Mate Hotels, ‘Be Mate’ luxury apartments and X-Perience consultancy.

“We create and offer unique experiences in every project we start. Nowadays, this magic is shown in our hotels and apartments alike. Wherever there is an opportunity to make people’s lives better, Room Mate will be there”, says Sarasola.

An observer of what is going on, and aware of what is happening around him, the businessman’s main objective is to offer the best service and be ahead of customer needs. A method which has led to him expanding his 24 hotels worldwide whose growth will double leading up to 2020, meaning 15.9% more turnover. He saw 83 million in turnover in 2018, and he expects 96.2 million this year, due in part to customers diversification, where over a million comes from the USA (15%), Spain (13%), the UK (9%) and Germany (7%).

Figures with which the hotel company hopes to have 36 hotels instead of 24, and 3.600 rooms instead of 1.800 in Madrid (Room Mate Alba and Room Mate Rex), Paris (Room Mate Alain) and Rome. Specifically, the latter is the city where he began to implement another business model: the luxury apartments.

With the ‘The Rooms of Rome’, Sarasola is again ahead of the demands of that tourism which looks towards: getting to know the city and experiencing the place by being a part of it. In order to achieve this, he counted on the collaboration of the architect, Jean Novel, who adapted the structure of these 24 apartments to the Palazzo Rhinoceros.

Its spacious facilities are equipped with home automation and customised services: beauty treatments and massages, training, showcooking, private city tours and artistic activities inside the Fondazione Alda Fendi. Furthermore, the fifth and sixth floors in this building are home to the ‘Caviar Kaspia Roma’ restaurant, whose panoramic views of the monte Palatino, the Foro Romano and the Arco de Tito; make diners feel as if they were really in Imperial Rome. Va pensiero.

Hotels which become architectural benchmarks

With the philosophy of “to feel right at home”, Sarasola has brought the utmost quality with the most careful design to each of his projects. The two principles which entail are his boutique hotels in Europe and in the USA. It is in them where the design, customer care and the signature furniture strengthen the general lines of these spaces.

Unique experiences in which internationally-renowned architects and interior designers have worked together, such as Teresa Sapey (Room Mate Aitana, Amsterdam), or the sophisticated Cuarto Interior (Room Mate Gorka, San Sebastián) interior design studio. “In Room Mate Hotels, we create cosy and different spaces. Whoever visits us is pleasantly surprised with the design in our hotels, but above all, with the treatment received, since we consider a guest more than that. For us, they are our mates; our friends; our room-mates. In Room Mate Hotels, we appreciate the respect shown to us and which is shown to everybody else”, states the company.
