Guide for cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom during the coronavirus epidemic

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, experts recommend disinfecting toilets, showers, washbasins and taps with water and bleach to remove all traces of bacteria.

Noken, the PORCELANOSA Group bathroom company, has designed a series of cleaner, more resistant and sustainable products to protect the health and hygiene of the user.

To stop the spread of COVID-19 and prevent infection, health authorities recommend everyone to wash their hands frequently and pay special attention to keeping the home clean, especially in bathrooms and kitchens, where dust and dirt can become a source of infection, if they are not properly cleaned.

Following the safety standards published by the Spanish Ministry of Health in its guide to hygiene measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the PORCELANOSA Group offers advice on how to ensure that your bathroom is kept really clean.

1. You can wash your hands AND save water

After the COVID-19 pandemic was declared, the World Health Organization (WHO) published guidelines urging people to take special care over personal hygiene in order to slow down the spread of infection around the world. The document stresses the need to wash your hands frequently with soap and water or with sanitiser gel.

Although this may involve using more water, taps by Noken, the PORCELANOSA Group bathroom company, allow you to save water when you wash your hands. The Waterforest range, for example, includes bathroom taps, sprinklers and hand showers which help you to reduce the amount of water you use by up to 89%.

2.  Clean the toilet and washbasin thoroughly

Before cleaning the bathroom, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 40-60 seconds. Then put on disposable gloves and remove all items such as soap, bowls, sponges, waste bins, brushes, etc. so that you can clean all parts of the bathroom thoroughly.

Sweep or vacuum clean the bathroom to remove surface dust. Next, take a hygienic or microfibre cloth and pour a small amount of disinfectant or bleach on it. Wipe the floor, walls, sink, toilet and shower with the cloth. Rinse all the areas where you have used bleach or disinfectant with water and dry the fittings with a different cloth or absorbent paper.

Finally, clean the bathroom floor with soap and water and leave to dry.

3.  Use disinfectant gel and bleach to sanitise other items

Before you replace the items you have removed, we recommend cleaning each of them with water and ammonia or disinfectant gel. Use the same mixture for door handles, shelves and bathroom cupboards.

4.  Wash bathroom towels at 60 degrees

Fungi and bacteria can accumulate on bathroom towels because they are in contact with our skin. To avoid infection with COVID-19 or any other disease, each member of the family should have their own towel and towels should be washed at least twice a week at a temperature of (at least) 60 degrees. For total disinfection, it is best to separate towels by colour and not mix them with other types of clothing. We recommend using a detergent with activated oxygen or, as an alternative, perfumed ammonia.
