The Jury of the 8th PORCELANOSA Awards: Carlos Jiménez

The Costa Rican architect Carlos Jiménez, having been a jury member of the jury in the Pritzker Awards for more than a decade (2001-2011), will be a member of the jury at the 8th Architecture and Interior Design Awards, announced by PORCELANOSA Group every year.

Carlos Jiménez moved to the United States at the age of 25 to study at University of Houston College of Architecture. He established his own Studio in 1983, known as Carlos Jimenez Studio (CJS), just two years after his degree. He has always combined his studio and teaching as well as his work as a lecturer and his habitual participation as a critic and jury member at international events and competitions, such as the Pritzker Awards –comparable to the Nobel Prize in Architecture- among others.

He has been a professor at Rice University School of Architecture (Houston) since 2000, and after teaching his lessons at some of the most renowned colleges of architecture, such as the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), Texas A&M University, University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) and at Berkeley, University of Navarra (Spain), Williams College in Massachusetts or the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.

As far as his work as an architect is concerned, some of his most famous projects include: Houston Central Government and the School of Fine Arts Museum, the Spencer Studio Art building at Williams College, Irwin Mortgage corporate headquarters, the Art Centre at Peeler de DePauw University, Crowley House, the library service data centre at Rice University, the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and the Evry downtown area (France).

According to Carlos Jiménez, Architecture has an influence on everyone’s life, with it able to change, enrich, surprise… ‘Through its gradual development in time and space’. Therefore, a well-erected building involves a time investment which will benefit its present and future users’ lives. This concept of his profession has brought him numerous award-winning prizes for excellence in design and teaching, awarded by prestigious institutions such as Architectural Record, American Institute of Architects, Rice University, Design Intelligence, Chicago Athenaeum, The Architectural League of New York, among others.
