Architecture awards

The 9th PORCELANOSA Group Awards: a floating concept-store by Ángela Acevedo, in the Forward-looking Projects section – category: Students

The taste of the sea dominates the lively and outstanding award-winning project at the 9th PORCELANOSA Group Architecture and Interior Design Awards in the category of Forward-looking Projects – Students: The Wave, designed by Ángela Acevedo del Álamo.

An architectural ‘wave’ which combines reading with restoration, done by the KRION® Solid Surface mineral compact. The state-of-the-art acrylic stone makes the creation of the future concept-store possible, in other words, a double commercial space together in the same design: bookshop and restaurant.

Thanks to the Solid Surface of PORCELANOSA Group, this project over the sea has been conceived, and with a walkway being the only contact with land. The Wave looks both stunning and dynamic through a continuous façade and cover, with two curtain walls placed at both the front and back façades. Both the malleability and the thermo-curving property of KRION® favour jointless creations in this project. Thus, one cannot find any joints, neither between the floor and the dynamic structures of the ceiling nor between the floor and furniture, which seems to have been be born and then reappear from the very basis of the project. This is the case, for example, with regard to the bookcases aimed at storing books in the bookshop area, which are continuously on show, from the floor to both the upper and side faces.

The mouldable property and the feeling of infinity which KRION provides is also present in the reception counter, as well as in both the bathroom and kitchen equipment. The quality, resistance and durability of KRION® makes it ideal for these high-demanding areas, which, furthermore, show the thermo-curving material in both multiple and dynamic ways. With regard to the counter, there is a cove lighting with LED technology located in its lower part.

One of the other characteristics of this floating project, turns out to be its wavy shape, taken as a reference for sea waves, blending into its own sea atmosphere. Ángela Acevedo del Álamo, a student at the Vinsac Design School, thought about a trinomial cloud, sea and land through the white, blue and brown colours, thus, creating both a harmonious and lively atmosphere.

On one hand, the white and blue colours and the lighting are present by means of the 1100 Snow White version of KRION®, whilst on the other hand, the earth colours are portrayed in the subtle introduction of wood in the project. In this regard, the insertion of the natural wood, with the Modern Multiformato Ceniza model of L’Antic Colonial, was combined together with various models of ceramic parquet, such as the anti-slip PAR-KER Oxford Castaño or the Liston Oxford Acero ceramic wall tile. The full through-body porcelain  of Urbatek was also used in different rooms, with highly-resistant properties, ideal for high-traffic areas, such as the Town White Nature or the XLight Emotion Snow or the Basic Steel  porcelain tiles.

Project location

The Wave is a project aimed at promoting a taste for both culture and reading. Its presumed location is in the Dubai waters, in the United Arab Emirates. Once the project was carried out, it would be a unique exclusive opportunity to enjoy gastronomy while experiencing the pleasure of reading in an outstanding location above the sea.
