The 8th PORCELANOSA awards: A special mention for the Kohn Pedersen Fox Studio

It is worth mentioning the award winning Kohn Pedersen Fox studio  for their new project -Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Complex terminal- at the 8th Architecture and Interior Design Awards by the PORCELANOSA Group.

In collaboration with the advanced Systempool technical team, this prestigious studio working worldwide will turn part of the desert into the “Garden of the Gulf”, in other words, into a space for international traveller’s traffic by totally adapting itself to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and by offering the necessary solutions for mobility in a continuously expanding society.

This new terminal, conceived as a gateway to the city, widely understood as being a dominant structure which is visible from the horizon from over 1,500 metres away, that is to say, a large-scale project where products by PORCELANOSA Group have been counted on.

Its inside design, an X-shape, provides the greatest efficiencies in the use of space, with a capacity to accommodate 59 aircrafts and to process around 50 million travellers each year. Furthermore, energy efficiency has been a must for the architects in charge of the project, who have created an undulating structure which protects the building from sunlight thanks to the revolutionary Krion Solid Surface as if it were a shell.

The project also includes a number of measures including the reduction in the use of drinking water and the efficient use of natural day lighting supplemented with sustainable energy lighting.

Operating as one firm with six offices all over the world, employing more than 600 workers coming from 43 different countries, and including over 80 LEED accredited professionals, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) is one of the world’s leading architecture firms, providing architecture in interior, programming and urban design, and master planning services for clients in both the public and private sectors.

KPF’s diverse portfolio, which features over 70 certified projects or pursuing green building certification (LEED), comprises corporate, hotel, residential, academic, civic, transportation and mixed-use projects located in more than 35 countries.

Mr. Mustafa Mohamad Chehabeddine, the director in the KPF London offices, was the person responsible for picking up the award at the Porcelanosa Awards ceremony last May.
