The project
We are dealing with the refurbishment of a house in Granada where a new house is overlying a previous existing order, thus, offering a new home where organisation is the core idea of the daily routine. In this way, the architects, Juan Antonio Serrano and Paloma Baquero, have refurbished a building by making the most of the existing resources, and they have stepped the concept of architectural order up a gear, too.
In this regard, this daring transformation has kept hold of the original structure of the house and the frames. The counterpoint is determined by a new wall consisting of translucent boxes, which apart from dividing the space, gives rise to the concept of order.
To start the project, the technicians took down all the accessory elements in the house, such as the partition walls, false ceilings and brick walls, with the aim of recovering the concrete pillars on which the original plaster structure and the frames are supported. After that, they focused on the creation of partitions in the building by making use of polypropylene boxes that work as walls. Through this organizational system, the members of the house may change the placing of the partition walls without working with the floor, and furthermore, they get a high storage capacity. Additionally, the boxes also make natural light enter easier, and they create a really cosy atmosphere in the house.
The materials: Wood and KRION® Solid Surface, key materials
At the Casa Desordenada, the architects have banked on the Iroko wooden floor. A material which provides the space with warmth, sobriety and usability, since this type of floor suits the outdoor terrace of the building perfectly, as well as similarly delicate areas, such as the bathroom and the kitchen.
In order to create the latter, the work area and the dining room, the architects have made use of the KRION® Solid Surface mineral compact. By making the most of the thermoforming properties of this state-of-the-art acrylic stone, developed by Systempool, and its versatility, a really original element was created. Furthermore, KRION® allows for creating surfaces in one single piece with invisible joints. KRION® Solid Surface turns out to be an ideal material for kitchens, and it is anti-bacterial and easy to clean.
The LED lighting systems go together with the latter structural elements. They enhance the natural light in the house and liven up the rooms and the original moulding of the house, therefore, the concept of overlapping styles and materials is reinforced.
As a result of that, the Serrano+Baquero Arquitectos studio offers a house where present trends and old structures go excellently together. Furthermore, the limits of the rooms fade away, therefore, creating an infinite space where, depending on the changeable natural lighting of the day, the accumulation of objects or the tasks carried out, an atmosphere which entails disorder and alters the established order is created.
