PORCELANOSA Group Projects: Waterways House – Dublin’s new architectural landmark with materials from Krion and Butech

The Smith + Kennedy Architects studio won the Commercial Project of the Year award at the 2019 Irish Construction Industry Awards for the project’s original approach.

The Krion™ ventilated façade brings light and balance to the building as a whole and allows energy savings of up to 30% in each of its facilities.

With a view of the Grand Canal, which encircles much of Dublin, Waterways House has been rebuilt with a ventilated façade using 1,400 m2 of Krion and Butech’s technical solutions. These are the materials chosen by Smith + Kennedy Architects and the construction company John Sisk & Son for the project.

An icon of the new Irish architecture

Recognised as the Commercial Project of the Year at the 2019 Irish Construction Industry Awards, the overall structure of this block stands out because of its pure white colour and sustainable design, achieved using Krion compact mineral facing. Krion is a light material which is resistant to extreme temperatures, solar radiation and bending. Its barely perceptible joints make cleaning easier and improve the soundproofing.

To install Krion, Smith + Kennedy Architects opted for the K-fix façade system, which allows Krion panels of up to 14 m2 to be fitted on the building and highlights the bright colours of the windows. The Butech professional team supplied and fitted each piece.

The main advantage of Krion over other options is that it is 100% recyclable and can lead to energy savings of 20% to 30%, as in Waterways House, whose eco-sustainable structure is endorsed by the LEED Gold certificate.
