PORCELANOSA Group takes action against climate change with its Eco Conscious programme

This initiative groups the multinational’s key measures and sustainable collections together, to tackle global warming and protect the environment.

The multinational’s eight firms have made a commitment to recycling waste and installing low energy consumption systems to promote responsible consumption.

Climate change is a fact. This has been demonstrated in the latest report on the State of the Global Climate in 2019 presented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) during the 2019 Climate Change Conference (COP25), showing that temperatures have been the highest in history over the last five-year (2015-2019) and ten-year (2010-2019) periods. “The average global temperature has risen by about 1.1°C since the pre-industrial era and ocean heat content is at a record level”, said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

In light of this, and to combat global warming, PORCELANOSA Group has created a sustainable measures programme called Eco Conscious which encompasses its eight firms’ greenest collections.

Actions to reduce environmental impact

All the materials and designs included in the Eco Conscious programme aim to promote clean energy and responsible consumption to improve people’s lives. The series of initiatives meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN in its 2030 Agenda.

Of all its green activities, renewable energy stands out: at PORCELANOSA Group’s central facilities 30% of energy consumed comes from its own cogeneration systems. The multinational has installed low consumption LED lighting to improve energy efficiency and promote rational electricity use.

This eco-efficient management also extends to water: Porcelanosa has reduced water consumption at its tile plants by up to 20%. This is added to its “zero dumping” project, which has seen the group install more than 12 purification plants and state-of-the-art systems to recycle industrial water.

The equitable distribution of water is also a priority for Noken. The Porcelanosa Group bathroom firm has developed Waterforest; a range of eco taps, shower columns, washbasins, and bathroom elements that can save up to 89% of water used.

L’Antic Colonial is also on board and promoting the same ecological spirit, through its marketing and use of wood derived from sustainable forests. More trees are cultivated than cut down in these forests, and the natural environment is preserved by creating new green areas and reforestation.

Live better: recycle

Over the last few years, PORCELANOSA Group’s eight companies have been applying the three Rs mantra: reduce, recycle, and regenerate. With this philosophy in mind, the multinational has created more eco-friendly collections such as Forest by PAR-KER™ and Starwood Ecologic ceramic wood.

These two products are made up of 95% recycled material, producing 40% less CO2 emissions during manufacturing, and supporting the fight against climate change.

Similarly, Butech has launched new ventilated façade systems which can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%. Yet another eco-friendly product is R-Eco: a post-consumer recycled plastic (recovered and reused plastic) that can be used with all Butech C2 adhesives in accordance with EN 12004. It contains 250 grams of recycled plastic, equivalent to 50 plastic supermarket bags (which would take around 55 years to decompose if not recycled).

In terms of sustainability, Krion™ mineral compact is a particularly significant innovation. This new generation solid surface is made up of two-thirds natural minerals (ATH: alumina trihydrate) and a low percentage of highly resistant resins. It is a non-porous and antibacterial material, resistant to high temperatures, easy to repair and clean, and is 100% organic.

This is the starting point for Krion Shell™, an engineered mineral composite made up of dolomite and recycled PET plastic eco-resin (up to 5%) which can be used to build durable and sustainable sanitary fittings.
