Porcelanosa's materials to decorate a space with a Japanese style

This interior design emphasises the simplicity of the décor with earthy colours, natural materials, dim lighting and low furniture.

Oriental decoration is a growing trend in Europe and an increasing number of homes, hotels and offices are including this style to enhance sensory design and connect with nature.

In this type of interior design it is common to design multipurpose rooms (kitchen-living room, bedroom-dining room) which in turn connect with the rest of the rooms by means of natural materials, soft tones and straight lines.

The following article lists some of the decorative keystones to achieve a modern Japanese design with the PORCELANOSA Group collections.

Open and warm spaces

Japanese interior design strives to open up all spaces outwards so that the energy can flow, in line with the Zen philosophy that inspires this trend.

If you want to transfer the principles of beauty, simplicity and balance to areas such as the kitchen, the first step is to extend the spaces to the rest of the home and unite them in a single design. To have a Japanese-style kitchen open to the living room (E7 Black Oak by Gamadecor), the most important thing to do is to create a diaphanous and natural room using natural wood (Classic parquet by L'Antic Colonial) or organic textiles such as cotton or linen.

Using natural stones or even surfaces that simulate textures such as marble or terrazzo (KRION® Terrazo Lux) will give the kitchen a more harmonious look. Additionally, the use of this Solid Surface in areas such as the worktop will improve the safety and cleanliness of the room due to its almost completely non-porous nature, its imperceptible joints and its bacteriostatic nature (it prevents the accumulation of stains and microbes).

This defence of simplicity, so characteristic of the Japanese style, must also be reflected in the decoration. Hence the combination of straight-lined minimalist furniture with neutral walls (white, beige or grey) or dim lighting. This can be done by including white ceramic wall tiles (Countour White and Old White by Porcelanosa) or nude wallpapers with geometric shapes and plant patterns (Skins Wallpaper by L'Antic Colonial), which will help you reinforce that sense of order and spaciousness.

Bathrooms that connect you with nature

Japanese bathrooms are conceived for meditation and body care, and in their decoration, order is sought through natural textures and pure forms. This type of bathroom is all about enhancing natural light, which is the central element and focal point of the space. This is why ornamentation and separation between areas is avoided by means of wall units, freestanding bathtubs (Titanium Tone) or compact mirrors. Another possible combination is to intersperse dark or earthy colours (green or orange) with wooden pieces (Minnesota Moka by PAR-KER®) to obtain that Zen decoration that defends the harmony of timeless design.
