Autumn décor lets you transform your home at a time of important changes. A period of transition that reflects the end of summer and the preparations for winter through a palette of warm and welcoming colours, rich textures and a general sense of calm.

The coming of autumn provides an opportunity to adapt and transform your home to better reflect the season. We get ready for the change of seasons, putting the carpets back on the floor, taking out warmer bedding, cleaning fireplaces and checking the central heating. The days get shorter and the cold starts to make an appearance.

In the following post, we explore some of the latest trends in autumn decoration. Colours and materials to make the home more welcoming and help us adapt more comfortably to the changes taking place outside our homes.

The colours of autumn

The colour palette of autumn reflects a softer light. The sun is lower in the sky, giving the atmosphere a golden tone and as the leaves fall, the landscape turns brown, yellow, ochre, gold and burned red. A spectacle that nature puts on for us, full of nostalgia and warmth.

These colours can be incorporated into walls, furniture and accessories to create the desired context in your home. Below we define some elements that you can bring from outside to the interior to recreate an autumn décor.

  • Natural decorative objects. Indoor plants in pots, pine cones, tree branches, wreaths of leaves, dry flowers and fronds of tall grass add the perfect texture to interior decoration.
  • Wallpapers. These elements offer a wide variety of patterns and designs that can provide the warm and welcoming atmosphere you are looking for in autumn decoration.
  • Craft and decorative objects. Vases, glassware, kitchen utensils and storage stairways in autumn materials brighten up walls, fireplace mantels, shelving and dining room tables.
  • Lighting. Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming atmosphere in autumn, due to the lack of outside light. Opt for foot lamps with fabric shades in warm colours to create a soft and pleasant light. With rattan and woven natural fibres, the effect is even more pronounced.
  • Scents and candles. Autumn decoration wouldn't be complete without scents for the home. The most intense olfactory notes usually work best in autumn, with opulent fragrances that evoke wood, leather, musk and spices.

Autumn accessories

Accessories are a simple way to transform the home with each change of season. For autumn decoration, you can add ceramic vases with dried flowers, decorative cushions with autumn motifs and art paintings that reflect the beauty of this season. Pumpkins, dried leaves and pine cones are other decorative elements that are perfect for autumn and can be placed in baskets or on the centre table.

Natural materials that evoke autumn decoration

Some common home materials are closely related to autumn decoration. Wooden floors, furniture and cabinets; rattan accessories and sisal carpets; terracotta, coloured crystals and golden touches; dried flowers or seasonal products such as pumpkins, etc. You can highlight them during this time by relocating them so they're more visible, or accentuate them with some decorative element. Here are some ideas:

  • Wooden floors. If you have this type of flooring, rugs and carpets should be placed away from the walls. This way you can showcase the texture of the boards below. This effect is enhanced by soft, bulky fabrics, likes a thick fur carpet, when contrasted against the surface of the floor.
  • Porcelain. The neutral earthy and brown colours of ceramic tiles provide extra comfort if combined with underfloor heating.
  • Wall covering. The 3D effect of wall panels is best visible under autumn light, when shadows are more pronounced. You can reinforce this feeling with warm-coloured paint or wallpaper panels with highly textured surfaces.
  • Ceramics and terracotta. Thanks to their warm, earthy shade, ceramics and terracotta fit perfectly into autumn décor. These materials are also commonly used in plant pots. You can fill them with lush vegetation and dry floral arrangements, for example.
  • Natural fibres. By incorporating natural fibres into autumn decoration, you are creating a setting that evokes nature's beauty during this season. The texture and warmth of rattan, fique, reed or sisal help to create a welcoming home.

Warm textiles for autumn

Whether in the bedroom or living room, the studio or a reading corner, cosy textiles and fabrics in autumn colours add warmth and colour. Bedspreads, blankets and cushions are the ideal way to instantly create an autumn atmosphere on sofas, armchairs and beds. You can add textures through knitted wool, tactile linen and velvet that will enhance this sensation, creating dimension and depth.

The colour ranges should oscillate between dark and light versions of the same colours to achieve the maximum effect. Brown and beige, combined with off-white and sand tones; orange, red and yellows; metallic touches like gold and a bright glimmering silk bring life to a sofa or bed.

Autumn decoration in the living room and bedroom should include window curtains. In addition to adding a print and colour, their fabric helps to isolate the warmth of the space and wrap it in a blanket of comfort. These elements keep us warm, literally and figuratively.

Autumn decoration in the kitchen

We spend more time at home in the autumn, preparing dishes to share with family and friends, watching our favourite series or simply staying warm. Kitchen and dining room tables tend to be used more heavily during these months.

  • Table decoration: You can install an autumn table runner, decorated with seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as pumpkins, squashes and figs. You can accompany this with cutlery in autumn colours such as red, orange and brown, and patterned dishes or coffee cups with floral motifs.
  • Kitchen worktops: Brass or copper utensils around the worktop can add a seasonal touch to the kitchen. You can also display some vegetables on the surface, especially the more striking ones, such as pumpkins. Even a basket of fresh apples on the worktop can add a touch of autumn décor to the kitchen.

The fireplace and home in autumn

Starting in autumn, the fireplace - whether it is gas, coal, or firewood - becomes the centre of the home. A contemporary fireplace and home create a central hub within a living space that has a great visual appeal. You can decorate it with candles, fruits, wreaths of dried leaves or flowers to give it a seasonal touch, and add logs for their aroma and decorative power.
