The 12th PORCELANOSA Group Awards pay homage to Kelly Hoppen

The renowned interior designer will be given the honorary award for her extensive career and her way of conceptualising design.

Her way of understanding and conceiving spaces has been keenly followed. Kelly Hoppen (Johannesburg, South Africa) has been championing British interior design, based on taupe tones and timeless décor, for over 40 years. A tireless traveler, her creations fuse together the eastern principles of simplicity and the western taste for sumptuous textures and luxurious finishes. Her work and involvement in design go hand in hand with the PORCELANOSA Group philosophy, who will present Kelly Hoppen with the Honorary Award for her professional career during the 12th Architecture and Interior Design Awards ceremony.

A 20th-century icon

Kelly Hoppen’s cosmopolitan and ground-breaking interior design style has made her a 20th-century icon. She has put her stamp on homes, yachts (Pearl 95, Pearl 80, Pearl 75 and Pearl 65), luxury hotels (Lux Grand Gaube and the Hotel Murmuri in Barcelona), the most impressive cruise ship to date (Celebrity Cruise Edge) and exclusive addresses in China on Shenzhen Bay. “My design philosophy has always been to create timeless and understated elegance. As a designer, it’s all about finding that harmony between style and comfort, and that is very important to me”, the interior designer said to the Lifestyle team.

“I always go with a classic neutral colour scheme. I do love to complement calming and neutral shade palettes with great accents of colour which can also transform a room. As a designer, I create layers of texture, whether it’s lighting (which I conceptualise of as a texture); fabrics; stone; the colour of the walls. Find what brings you a sense of serenity and security and incorporate that into your interior”, Hoppen remarked.

Creativity in continuous renovation

Her professional inquisitiveness and ambition have led her to move into TV and film. Hoppen has taken part in the British TV programme, Dragon’s Den. And she appeared in Absolutely Fabulous, The Movie, by director Mandie Fletcher. Having written ten books, her latest came out in 2016: House of Hoppen; a retrospective, where she goes over the history of design through her own experiences and achievements.
